THE MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE
VISUALIZED
The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allen Poe can only be described as jarring, violent, and quintessentially mind-bending. This graphic adaptation visualizes the last scenes of the story through the German expressionist scratchboard style and original text to heighten the intensity of the story. Alongside the jagged linework, the high-contrast black and white counters the morally gray murder story. As the chaos is recounted, the panels become less defined, breaking the traditional rectangular frames in comics. To further communicate the uneasiness of the speaking characters, the typography stems from the intertitles used in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a psychological horror also from the German Expressionist era. These artistic choices push the boundaries of graphic novels and visualizations by ultimately inserting the heaviness of this iconic story in a completely new and memorable way.
